Just an update from me . . .

What's been happening?

Going hard at work. The only interesting thing about that is basically looking to get a bit more financially secure in the short term before pushing on with the drum'n bass. Looking forward to when I can kick back working on some new tunes and planning some more decent parties.

New electro funky remix of North Shore's Element's "Forever" ft. Zeisha should be popping out about the place as a free download pretty soon.

Sonic confinement the beat dungeon compilation featuring 14 fresh nz tunes is in production, ready for release in May.

I'm still working on my next mix cd "Gentleman Caller" featuring a few new tracks from me and a mix, due also in May

After the frantic amen breakbeats of Jungle paved the way for Goldie's hallmark release "Timeless" in 1995, the the two part "stepping" signature beat of the emerging Drum and Bass progression drew on the work of Jungle/Drum and Bass pioneer LTJ Bukem who had already begun infusing his breakbeats with dense and hypnotic Soul, funk and jazz flourishes ever since the 1993 anthem "Music", echoed by producers such as Peshay with "The Piano Tune" and Roni Size's break out tune "It's a jazz thing" aka "It's jazzy".

While a distinctly "darkside" movement of heavy, bass driven beats was readying to emerge as "tech step", led by labels No U Turn and Emotif featuring key artists Ed Rush, Trace and Nico, there was a brief era that could be mapped from "Timeless" to Roni Size / Reprazent's "New Forms" where Jazz influenced Drum and Bass became very trendy and exclusive. This movement was labelled "Jazzstep".

Key artists also included Alex Reece with the anthem "Pulp Fiction" in 1996 which signalled the ascendance of the signature 2 step break in Drum and bass and Adam F who made massive impact with his album featuring the anthem "Circles". Other artists of prominence included EZ Rollers.

Drum'n bass toward the end of the 90's was dominated by the darker Tech step sound, first championed by Ed Rush and carried forward by the group Bad Company, Drum'n Bass's first "super group".

But the return of Peshay to scene in 2001 with his anthem "Got me burning" smashing through the domination of dark drum'n bass with its energised filtered disco and tightly looped samples, coined the phrase "House'n Bass".

J Majik also achieved a massive dancefloor hit with his remix of the anthem "Spaced Invaders" by Hatiras which also combined filtered house with heavy drum beats and basslines of tech step.

"Liquid Funk" was a term coined by DJ Fabio of radio 1 to describe the new wave of funk, soul and jazz influenced tunes that begun to come through.

The quintessential Liquid Funk track was a remix produced by a duo who had long been pushing the return of musical vibes to Drum'n Bass. This was originally a tune by tech step Drum'n Bass duo Future Cut, who had begun producing Jazz influenced drum'n bass as Uncut with singer Jenna G.

"Midnight" by Uncut ft. Jenna G (Marcus Intalex and ST files) represented the arrival of Liquid Funk proper.

unlike it's predecessor Jazz Step, Liquid Funk embraced the heavier drum beats and bass lines that had been progressed by Tech Step, but used melodic and musical elements such as

Hits followed on giving rise to the new era of Liquid Stars: Jump up stalwart Shy FX collaborating with another jazz step pioneer, T-power produced the chart assaulting "Shake Ur Body"

DJ Marky had an international hit teamed up with MC Stamina "LK" aka "it's the way", while a teenage producer going by the name of High Contrast rocked the drum'n bass world with a series of soul heavy smashers starting with "return of forever" and "make it tonight".

Finally, an irish drummer with unrivalled ear for classically warm and organic sounding beats who had already gained critical acclaim within the Drum'n Bass scene began to produce some of the best Drum'n Bass - Calibre.

The rise of the Hospital recordings label in the early 2000's as the flagship Liquid Funk label cemented the position of the sub genre.

Recent high profile Liquid Funk artists have included Makoto (japan), Bungle (brazil), Commix as well as a strong movement coming up now in Scandinavian regions.

Liquid funk is a style of drum and bass. While it uses similar basslines and bar layouts to other styles, it contains fewer bar-oriented samples and more instrumental layers (both synthesized and natural), harmonies, and ambience, producing a calmer atmosphere directed at both home listeners and nightclub audiences.

In 2000, Fabio began championing a new form of drum and bass he called "Liquid funk", with a compilation release of the same name on his Creative Source label. This was characterised by influences from disco and house, and widespread use of vocals. Although slow to catch on at first, the style grew massively in popularity around 2003-2004, and by 2005 it was established as one of the biggest-selling subgenres in drum and bass, with labels like Good Looking Records (although this label is strongly cross-genred with atmospheric drum and bass), Hospital Records, Liquid V, Rubik Records, Fokuz Recordings, State of the Art Recordings and artists like Calibre, High Contrast, Logistics, London Elektricity, Nu:Tone and Solid State among its main proponents.

Liquid funk is very similar to intelligent drum and bass, but has subtle differences. Liquid funk has stronger influences from soca, latin, disco, jazz, and funk music, while IDB creates a calmer yet more synthetic sound, using smooth synth lines and samples in place of the organic element achieved by use of real instruments.

Internet update: new bio + new widgets!

Okay I had a bad run of luck recently, basically a lot of sitting around - so I been updating my music online.

I have been agonizing over a new bio!!!! because since I decided to give all my songs away free now, I decided I needed update my online profiles, and go with a new official bio for all my online music distributors.My old bio was a little bit to casual, y’know I had this piss take thing about my grandma saying I could sell my CD in local shops, and how I’d still be making beats if was under a bridge banging on an empty beer bottle with a used fit. (hypodermic needle)

That’s imagery, I guess.

But yeah it wasn’t that big. I don’t want to create the impression that just because I’m not interested in selling my music, it’s no good, and I’m just some dude who’s got some loops going on his PC.

Then I try and get all deep and meaningful and seriously it just sounds – yknow – I mean I’m good at that stuff but you know me it starts sounding more like my little pony than drum’n bass and what is it . . .

But y’know especially with drum’n bass - it’s not all about me. Where I grew up and what I’m about doesn’t really matter, it’s about you, you’re going to download the music and enjoy it for a while and get something new again later.

No one cares about my life, or my “achievements” or whether I've paid my dues - they just want to find and download good music, so basically I just wanted to recognize that. So it's just music, links and keywords.

CYANTIFIC + NU:TONE @ FU BAR, AUCKLAND // MARCH 6 2008

Big fan of both these artists but was aware of Cyantifics skills on the decks. Nu:Tone it was fair to say didn’t shine, it didn’t help that he tended toward the more intellectual minimal tech style rather than more melodic numbers. Cyantific on the other hand was a real performer and one of the most exciting DJ’s I’d seen in awhile.

It might be said it was almost a bit much and though his skill and performance quality made it a pleasure to be there - to be critical you could say there was perhaps room for a littttllle more sophistication and elegance.

Okay I am kicking off blogging seriously for romantech, basically I’m fully embracing the artist 2.0 thing now.

YES it would still be lovely to “get signed” and have a vinyl one day I do hope for it but right now Im committed to promoting my online digital network. I certainly plan to release an official CD at some point but right now im focused on building my website into my “digital mothership” where I can collect and curate tunes, mixes, blogs and writing about my work, videos etc.

so eventually in a couple of years I have a nice little site where people can come and get up to date info, mixes and free downloads of all the kinds of deep and funky drum’n bass stuff I love to play and make and all kinds of stuff to do with the beats im into all organised ans presented really nice.

I just think being free to release tunes, videos, words, regularly and in a way I think makes sense will be really liberating over agonising on how an album is going to create the impact I want.

So blogging for romantech is one of the first steps im taking in building up a movement for romantech project beats and media and I hope to be doing my first video soon. Other than news from me in terms of stuff you can and thoughts on drum’n bass related stuff, I hope to be reviewing lots of the tunes im downloading off beatport, talking in more depth about the Auckland scene, promoting internationals and playing around NZ, discussing style more than technique when it comes to DJing and production but yeah. Heaps of stuff.

Often im around home writing beats or drumming up a storm on the internet, tens of thousands of people have downloaded and enjoyed my music. I get around the country and play out a fair bit while there’s always something in the works with my partner in crime DJ Control - on top of our weekly Soul Science smooth drum’n bass nights every Thursday @ Foci Bar in Beresford Square, we plan international DJ events regularly.

During the Data:bass and Mental Illness projects, I managed twelve local cd-r releases of local drum’n bass and electronic music in less than three years. Nobody really took much notice, but it was a nice idea. I’ve always been a firm believer in underground networks and in this spirit have put together my latest offering and first official CD release “Oceanic Chill” featuring 23 artists on the downbeat tip.

A big highlight for me would have been being chased off stage by security while dressed as Skeletor our anti-P mascot during the data:bass set at Resolution 04. The crowd went nuts and I’ve always known being a great DJ isn’t just about having great tunes and great skills, it’s about giving a great performance and creating the vibe that makes people wanna rave out hard.

DJ Romantech is A prolific DJ/Producer of smooth Drum’n bass/downbeat and the iconoclastic electro pop act reality compound. As the guiding force behind the Data:bass collective and the Mental Illness compilations he has released 9 full length compilations and 3 solo projects of local Drumn Bass and Electronica in less than three years. having toured the nation three times over and having made his presence felt on websites such as myspace.com and download.com with over 30,000 downloads last year, romantech is now resident at foci’s thursday night “soul science” session as part of soul science.

Having been described as “The pocket battleship of Auckland’s D’n B scene” building a much needed alternative for young DJ’s and Producers making beats to get exposure, his recent activities have involved networking internationally to bring the freshest underground elements of this sound to local audiences through regular gigging, tours and releases within New Zealand. New offerings are expected in the form of the “Oceanic” compilation series featuring top artists based in New Zealand, Australia, and South East Asia.

He has of course played at all of the Data:bass nights and at Resolution 04 where he was chased off stage by Security. He has had popular shows and close involvement with Fleet fm 88.3, Kfm 106.9 and now finds himself at Twisted 107.7 fm playing funky liquid Drum’n Bass, Data:bass material and downbeat and eclectic electronica from the Mental Illness files.

Romantech also writes and records many explorations outside of format Drumn Bass into more downbeat, Electro, Indie and free form electronic territory. melodic beats brought together under the influence of the great modern melodic traditions: Jazzy, Dubby and Ambient flavas permeate this potent mix. Meaningful, but still groovy. Introspective - but not a drag.

Ancient bio bits of stuff

Always romancing the stoned with his special blend of only the funkiest liquid Drum'n Bass & breakbeat flavas . . . for me it's all about progressing funk, soul, reggae and atmospheric music into the future with a big funky dancefloor sound - I'm mainly focused on liquid Drum'n Bass but to me it's all the same - kickin' bass, killer melodies, bangin' beats, and good vibrations.

I am funky liquid drum'n bass DJ who plays out in my hometown of Auckland, New Zealand most weekends. You can listen to my music. And if you like funky, vibing dancefloor flavas you should.I got into Jungle and Trip Hop as a teenager in the mid 90's after being turned on to raves and cafs and that. I've been playing out and making beats for three years as Romantech. In late 2002, me and my mate started Data:bass Network here in Auckland, New Zealand - and I'm now running our label, 0474:8455 Recordings. I have also "released" a full length, mixed cd-r demonstration of our material from the funky side of things, "Lickwicked".

I'm on an urban buzz, that's my vibe, searching out the good things from amongst it all, searching for something to feel good about, to make you whole, that makes you just wanna ride it out on a fast break with a ridiculously funky lick on it , and your jumping up, moving into the future . . . or your chilling and this incredibly moving melody just hits you and cracks you open and all this shit comes flowing out of you and you look back, and you look forward, and you look around . . . and it makes you fully just THINK!I also produce downbeat and other more "at-home" joints as Further. + You can check out my DJ mixes on my homesite.

My mixing's nothing flash, I can mix a bunch of records together, but when I step to the plates I represent for all the elements that Data:bass brings together - the music, the artists, the events - in my running of the label, and my commitment to building the Data:bass thing as something that can be better for more and more people who wanna do good things, and of course for those who come to us to have a good time.

I'm mainly into my production, I've got at least a hundred songs, all kinds. I've gone back to pure songwriting, then I lay down a break or some beats down on it. My strength is melodies and hooks, and I got my singer girl Haze, Bobbylon's daughter. "Sensitive yet soulful" is what I like to say about her. I play all the funky vocal numbers, and my dream is like to be the guy who gets called in to do big rolling club remixes of shit like K.lee and Nesian Mystic . . . and get away with it! . . . And . . . and like, make Drum'n Bass more acceptable to the mainstream so they can understand how funky and charging it is, and we can get cashed up and have massive free parties and give away heaps of CD's and sponsors products and shit! And I can retire into being this fat little gold chain wearing sugar daddy cutting up and playing out cheesy bootlegs and focusing on my stage act, like with dancers and pyrotechnics and Imagine if the next record would be lowered down from above in this brilliant cocoon of light and interpretive dancers would shuttle the hallowed twelve across the stage to meet it's destiny at the hand of the diamond tip . . .
